Gut Barrier (GB) Panel : Comprehensive Assessment of Intestinal Permeability
Overview
Advanced leaky gut evaluation using immune and barrier integrity markers. Leaky gut is not a single condition but a continuum of intestinal barrier dysfunction. To reflect this complexity, the KBMO Gut Barrier (GB) Panel evaluates multiple “gatekeeper” markers involved in gut integrity, immune activation, and microbial translocation.
For each marker, the panel measures:
- IgG subclasses 1–4 with C3d
- IgA subclasses 1 and 2
This dual immune assessment provides a deeper understanding of both systemic and mucosal immune responses related to gut barrier breakdown.
Key Gatekeeper Markers Assessed in Gut Barrier Panel Test
Candida
Candida overgrowth in the gastrointestinal tract can disrupt microbial balance and weaken the intestinal lining. The GB Panel evaluates immune responses to Candida, recognizing dysbiosis as an early contributor to leaky gut development.
Zonulin
Zonulin is a well-established biomarker of intestinal permeability. Elevated zonulin levels indicate dysregulation of tight junctions between intestinal cells, allowing unwanted substances to pass through the gut barrier.
The Zonulin marker used in this panel is exclusive to KBMO.
Occludin
Occludin is a structural protein essential for maintaining tight junction stability. Increased immune reactivity to occludin suggests breakdown of tight junction integrity, signaling compromised barrier function.
Lipopolysaccharides (LPS)
LPS are components of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria. Elevated antibody responses to LPS indicate bacterial translocation across the gut barrier, a hallmark of leaky gut and gastrointestinal inflammation.
GB Panel Interpretation
The panel evaluates a total of 8 immune markers across the four gatekeepers.
- If any marker is positive, consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended to initiate an appropriate gut repair and healing protocol.
- Results help identify whether immune activation is driven by dysbiosis, barrier disruption, or bacterial endotoxin exposure.
